Arika Yamada: A Terpsichore Consulting Success Story

Arika YamadaWithin each individual, there lives a special talent. For Thomas King Flagg, that talent is the ability to recognize unrealized potential. Thomas King Flagg is to dance what a surveyor is to an ordinary rock formation. He can detect certain properties in dancers that are invisible to the naked eye, and by leading the dancer through a specialized process, he is able to cultivate the fantastic brilliance within. This singular ability has led Thomas King Flagg to the helm of one of the dance world's premiere management companies, Terpsichore Management.

For Arika Yamada it was Thomas' special ability to spot that unrealized potential that led her on an extraordinary journey toward career success.

One day, while observing a ballet class at a Hollywood dance studio, Thomas' eye was drawn to a small Japanese girl named Arika Yamada. At first glance, she was petite, ungainly, and judging by the line of her body, she was without good training: mostly flash, with little substance.

Thomas King Flagg saw something in Arika Yamada which spoke to him and touched his soul. So much so, that he felt compelled to show it to the world.

Thomas scheduled a meeting with Arika and her parents, Fumie and Koji Yamada, Thomas spoke to the Yamadas about Arika's potential, and her need for better training. If Arika wanted to become a professional dancer she needed serious instruction. To start over at age14 would be difficult, but not impossible. So strong was Thomas' conviction that Arika had something remarkable to bring to the stage, the family had no choice but to listen. She would retrain, with Thomas as her manager and consultant.

Now there was the big picture to consider. As part of the contractual agreement with Terpsichore Management and Consulting International, Thomas committed himself to providing Arika with the best training in the world. He promised that within three years time, Arika would be a mere audition away from a professional career with a concert dance company.

Arika's most essential need was a crash course in ballet technique. After careful consideration, Thomas identified a remarkable instructor in Melbourne, Australia, named Leeanne Rutherford.

Thomas made the arrangements. Leeanne, despite her renowned choosiness, accepted Arika on Thomas' word alone. Arika had a remarkable challenge ahead Upon their return from Australia, the Yamadas continued their dialogue with Mr. Flagg.

Thomas arranged introductions and auditions with renowned coach, Elena Tchernichova and Arika was accepted to the Nutmeg Conservatory.

Arika YamadaDuring the next two years, Arika would come to dance leading roles in the Conservatory's workshop performances. During school holidays, she would study with some of the most prestigious teachers in the country, including Yvonne Mounsey, Doug Caldwell, and Marat Duakayev.

As her time at Nutmeg drew to a close, Arika, her parents, and their dance manager, Thomas Flagg, began to discuss the next and perhaps final step before a fully-realized professional career. The buzz was JUILLIARD. Arika was now eligible to audition for the prestigious program of summer study

Thomas began to lay the groundwork, establishing good relationships between the Yamadas and influential members of the faculty.

Thomas flew from Los Angeles to help provide Arika with the support she would need to be confident and successful in her trial. Arika was promptly accepted into the prestigious summer program at Juilliard.

Arika made such wonderful progress during the summer session that Thomas suggested she attend again the following year. The day before the final audition, Thomas decided that there should be one final lesson. He summoned Arika and her mother to a rented a dance studio. During the two hours spent there, Arika learned from Thomas how to assert her presence when entering a room. And from her Japanese mother, she learned how to bow in reverence to her evaluators.

By the end of the day she received a call informing her that she had been accepted to Juilliard's distinguished School of Dance.

The ebb and flow of relationships, the insights of real-life sorcerers, the honesty of hard work and, overseeing it all, the guidance and experience of manager, Thomas King Flagg, worked together to make a dream come true.

The surveyor in this success story is none other than Thomas King Flagg, whose qualified opinions and copious resources helped to guide Arika's journey. Each dancer should have such a presence at his/her side, a catalyst, a sounding-board, a connection. Contact:
